The method · in full
An instrument, given back to its owner
What follows is the method as it is actually taught: the mechanism, the five layers, the four positions, the three questions, the shape of the arc, and the things this method will not do. It is long because it is the work, not an advertisement for the work.
i
Capacity and load
Start with two words, because almost everything else in this method depends on holding them apart. Load is what is being asked of you: the hours, the decisions, the illness in the family, the restructure, the person at home whose mood sets the weather. Capacity is what you have available to meet it: sleep, health, money, time, other people, and the slack in your own attention.
Neither is a moral quantity. Capacity is not willpower and load is not weakness. But the culture your audience lives in has almost no vocabulary for load, and an enormous vocabulary for character. So when the two go out of balance, the explanation that arrives first is always the wrong one: not I am carrying more than this arrangement can hold, but something is wrong with me.
You can watch the substitution happen in ordinary speech. A person says they are disorganised when they are carrying four jobs. A person says they have become cold when they have been on alert for nine months. A person says they have lost their edge when what they have lost is a night’s sleep, every night, since February.
When load exceeds capacity for long enough, behaviour changes. Not randomly: predictably, and in an order. Attention narrows. The number of available explanations for any event drops towards one. Effort goes up while output goes down, which is read as further evidence of fault, which raises the load again. That loop is the ordinary machinery of a difficult year, and it does not require anybody in your life to be a villain.
Here is the part the industry around this method will not tell you, because it does not sell: a great deal of what is happening to you is arithmetic. When the arithmetic changes, much of the behaviour changes with it. The rest — the part that persists after the load drops — is the part this method is actually for.
That persisting part has an origin, and the origin is usually success. The sharpness worked. The vigilance worked. The over-preparation worked. The taking-it-all-on worked, spectacularly, in a room that offered nothing better. And so it was kept, promoted, and generalised to rooms that were never like the first one.
It worked. That’s the problem. What worked got kept.
This is why insight alone does so little. People can describe their pattern with great accuracy and continue running it, because the pattern is not a misunderstanding. It is a solution that outlived its problem. You do not argue a solution out of somebody. You give them a way to read the room they are actually in, and a smaller thing to do in it.
ii
The spine
The method holds five layers. They are not personality traits, types, or stages of enlightenment. They are the parts of an ordinary operating system that can be observed degrading, in order, when load runs ahead of capacity.
Signal is the raw reading: the body reporting its state before you have language for it. Story is the account you give of that reading. Self is what you take the account to mean about your worth. System is the arrangement you are inside, which either registers your load or runs on it. Shift is the change you can actually make, and keep, from where you stand today.
The order matters more than the list. Faults travel downstream. If Signal is late, Story is working from bad data, and no amount of examining your beliefs will fix a reading that never arrived. If Story only has one account available, Self will take that account as a verdict. If Self is issuing verdicts, you will read your System as evidence about your character rather than as an arrangement with a shape. And Shift, attempted from there, will be enormous, unrepeatable, and abandoned by the second week.
Repair runs the same way. This is the least popular sentence in the method, because everyone would prefer to start at the end. You cannot begin at Shift. You begin where the reading is taken.
The spine
Five layers, in one direction
The layers degrade downstream. Signal fails first, and everything after it inherits the fault. Repair runs the same way — you cannot start at the end.
Signal
What your body reports before you have words for it.
Nothing above this layer holds if this one is offline.
Under load
- The reading arrives late, or not at all.
- Tiredness is read as laziness; fear is read as urgency.
- You need someone else to tell you whether the room was bad.
In repair
- You notice the reading while it is still small.
- You can name the state without arguing with it.
- You stop asking others to confirm what you already registered.
iii
The four positions
When load rises, people move. They do not become a different person; they travel along a line they have travelled before. The method describes that travel on two axes: how hard you push, and how close you stay.
Insist is pushing hard while staying close. Absorb is staying close while yielding. Withdraw-and-press is pushing from a distance. Step out is neither pushing nor staying. Each one is competent somewhere. Each one is expensive somewhere else.
The mistake the whole category makes here — and the mistake the first version of this site made — is to draw four boxes and invite you to find yourself in one. Four boxes turn directions into identities, and identities are exactly what this method refuses to hand out. The question is not which one you are. It is which way you go when the load goes up, how far you go, and whether you chose it or inherited it.
The four positions
Positions are directions, not types
Two axes: how hard you push, and how close you stay. Nobody lives in a corner. Under load you travel — usually along one familiar line. Move the marker and watch the reading change.
Reading
Absorb
You stay close and you take the load. It works, which is the problem: an arrangement that runs on your absorption will keep running on it.
push 28 · closeness 72
No position here is a personality. The question the method asks is not which one you are. It is which way you travel when the load goes up, and whether you chose it.
iv
The three questions
Everything above is description. These three questions are the working part, and they are asked in this order, of yourself, about a specific event — never about a person in general.
One. What worked? Not what went wrong. What did this behaviour successfully achieve, at some point, for someone under pressure? Answer it honestly and the behaviour stops looking like a defect and starts looking like an old tool with a good service record.
Two. What is it costing now? In hours, in relationships, in the specific things you no longer do. Costs stated in general terms cannot be weighed. Costs stated in particulars can.
Three. What would one option more look like? Not the right answer — one more available answer.
One option is a problem. Two options is a dilemma. Three options is choice.
Most people under load are not choosing badly. They are choosing from a list of one, which is not choosing. The method’s entire practical ambition is to raise the length of that list, in ordinary situations, by one item at a time.
There is a fourth question that is not asked out loud, because it governs the other three: are we hard on the behaviour, or hard on the person? The method is hard on the behaviour, and it applies that rule to you as strictly as it applies it to anyone in your life.
v
The arc: below zero, the turn, above zero
People arrive at this work at different depths, and the same instruction given at the wrong depth does harm. So the method describes three regions.
Below zero. Sleep is gone, the readings are unreliable, and the story has collapsed to one line. Nothing ambitious belongs here. The only work that holds below zero is load reduction and basic maintenance: fewer things, more sleep, one other human being who knows. Anyone who sells you a growth programme in this region is selling to your desperation.
The turn. Not a breakthrough, not a moment of clarity — the point at which the readings start arriving on time again, and a second explanation becomes available for the first time in months. It is usually undramatic and often noticed only in hindsight. It is the first moment at which practice, rather than repair, is possible.
Above zero. Capacity now exceeds load with some margin. This is where the old kept behaviour becomes visible as behaviour rather than necessity, because there is finally room around it. Here the work is deliberate: choosing which of the old tools to keep, which to retire, and what to do with the margin now that you have it.
The arc is not a ladder and it is not one-way. A bereavement, a restructure, or an illness will take an above-zero person below zero in a fortnight, and the correct response is to change the work, not to conclude that the person has failed.
vi
What the method refuses to do
It does not diagnose the people around you. It will not give you a clinical word to carry back into your household. ICD-11 removed narcissistic personality disorder as a standalone diagnostic category; the wider industry kept the word anyway, because it sells. A label applied at distance is not an assessment, it is a weapon that also happens to end your own enquiry. You are not owed a diagnosis of another adult. You are owed an instrument for the pattern you are both inside.
It is not therapy. It is a practice method taught in cohorts. It does not treat conditions, and it is not a substitute for care from someone qualified to give it. If you are in treatment, this sits alongside it, and your clinician outranks this website.
It is not a certification. There is no accreditation ladder, no trainer tier, no licence to resell. Methods that grow by licensing their own resellers stop being methods within about two years.
It does not promise a new life. No eight-week reinvention, no guaranteed outcome, no claim about what your brain is doing. What it offers is smaller and more defensible: better readings, more options, and one change you can keep.
It does not require your whole history. You do not have to explain your whole life to be allowed in this room.
And where somebody’s behaviour has an explanation — a history, a pressure, a diagnosis they do hold: it explains it. It does not excuse it. And it does not oblige you to absorb it.
